Madekwe is the daughter of the mixed race family of South London in England. She has a father who is Nigerian as well as Swiss as well as her mom is English. She was born and raised in a council estate south of London. In the ages of fourteen, she was enrolled at The Brit School. In London, she studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where her acting certificate was obtained. While attending the academy, she appeared in numerous stage productions such as King Henry V playing Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw.

In the following film, she appeared in Elisha on a BBC Three pilot drama, in West 10 LDN. In her role, she also played Ollie in the six episodes in the series Trexx, Flipside, and Flipside. In 2008, she was offered the Bambi role on ITV2 Drama series Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Madekwe was in both series 2 and 3. Madekwe was a part of the comedy How to Lose Friends and alienate others (2008). She has performed as a character in Little Sweet Thing, by Roy Williams, and Flight Path written by David Watson.
Madekwe's US debut was in 2009, with the drama The Beautiful Life. The drama aired for just two episodes before it was removed from The CW. In February of 2011, she was cast in the role of Ashley Davenport in the ABC drama series Revenge. In late May 2013, it was revealed that Madekwe, who played a regular role in the two previous seasons, would be leaving the show after a guest-appearance in the premier episode of the season's new episode. Madekwe starred as Tituba in the television series Salem from 2014 to 2016. In June 2012, Madekwe got married to her long-time partner, actor Iddo Goldberg. They worked together in the film Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Goldberg also appeared with her on Salem.

Ashley Leggat, an actress that was nominated two times for the Gemini Award, comes from the large Hamilton family. Ashley Leggat joined Roy and Patty and her other siblings, Brett, Todd and Bram and Rob. Ashley's four brothers, who were all extremely active, took part in hockey during the winter months and played baseball in the summer months, which means they grew up mostly in parks and arenas. Ashley did not walk; instead, she danced. In the age of two and a half, she was introduced to Baby Ballet. Ashley began to be a dancer following this. Ashley was a competitor in ballet, jazz and tap at the top divisions. She was crowned the top soloist at each of the most prestigious dance competitions like, International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers, 5-6-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, and Dance, Dance, Dance just to mention a few.
